It has been a wild week with all the new OpenAI voice features (we need to play with them to really know if they are THAT good though...) I just watched Her for the first time- and the fact that Sam Altman tweeted "her" before the announcement and then denied the voice was Scarlett Johansson is pretty audacious...I agree with you that it gets pretty scary when twenty/thirty-something tech bros in Silicon Valley/SF start living out their sci fi fantasies with REAL products affecting REAL people is a bit unsettling. It feels like we are playing with fire now... The stakes are high to get AI right and this past week has made me pause. The timing of your piece here is perfect. Loved your writing this week. This is a point I recently made in my newsletter: we all have a cultural bias when it comes to AI. For instance, in Eastern cultures AI doomsday scenarios are not common, and the ones from the West are inspired by apocalyptic movies.
