A conversation with former astronaut Cady Coleman
On this week's episode of Modem Futura, Sean Leahy and I had the opportunity to talk all things space with my good friend and former NASA astronaut Cady Coleman
This week’s episode of Modem Futura was a real treat. I got to pair up again with good friend and former podcast co-host (not to mention NASA astronaut) Cady Coleman.
When we used to co-host the podcast Mission: Interplanetary together, Cady and I were the ones asking the questions. But this week we turned the tables and I had the chance to chat with Cady directly about her work, life, and passions.
Sean and I got to talk with her about going to space and her experiences on the International Space Station, her thoughts about humans in space, women in STEM, the importance of being inclusive in all things space-related, and — of course — her recent book Sharing Space.
We had an absolute blast — and it was so humbling talking with someone who’s achieved so much. One of my favorite podcast episodes to date.
For context, Cady’s a former NASA Astronaut and a retired US Air Force Colonel with more than 180 days in space, accumulated during two space shuttle missions and a six-month expedition to the International Space Station (ISS) as the Lead Robotics and Lead Science officer. She’s served in a variety of roles within the Astronaut Office, including Chief of Robotics, and lead astronaut for the integration of supply ships from NASA’s commercial partners. And to cap it all, she coached Sandra Bullock from the ISS in preparation for her astronaut role in Gravity; played a flute duet with Jethro Tull’s Ian Anderson while she was on the ISS, and occasionally plays with the Irish band, The Chieftains including from space when she was in orbit!).
